Sometimes my relentless reviewing agenda crowds out other things I should be writing about on my blog. October and November have been busy months, and I’ve been meaning to jot down some thoughts and memories; here are a few things I’ll remember about fall 2012.
THE ELECTION. Like many of us, much of my October was consumed with presidential election dread. The Obama-Romney showdown was, I think, a low water mark in U.S. politics…and that’s saying something. Suffice it to say, I’m pleased that we’ve stepped back from the right wing social agenda again. Mainly, though, I’m just glad it’s over. Here’s hoping our elected officials all get their acts together and fix things up. Peace!
THE NHL LOCKOUT. Or should I say, the latest NHL lockout. Last time the NHL shut down, I blamed the players and the owners equally. This year, I’m laying it squarely on the owners. Either way, could the timing be worse for a bunch of millionaires and billionaires to argue about their profits while their strapped fans consider themselves lucky to even go to a game? Oddly, I haven’t missed hockey much this fall, and I’m enjoying all the extra time. Am I growing out of hockey? Maybe the Kings won a Stanley Cup at just the right time for me? Oh well, we’ll see if I’m still interested when it starts back up…sometime in 2013.
NEW GLASSES. Another thing I’ll remember about this fall is that I finally got off my ass and went to an eye doctor for the first time in…ten years? Turns out my right eye had been overcompensating for my weaker left eye. Now I’ve got two new pairs of glasses, and one of them is a real departure for me — sort of a “Oh the hell with it, I wear glasses already” look. Jenn says they make me look like a NASA scientist or a CIA analyst from the 1970s. I kinda like ’em….what do you think? (Here I am, with bonus Oslo biteyness…)
NEW OFFICE. My five-year anniversary at my copy editing job is coming up. Not much has changed in that time, except hopefully my competence. But this week we relocated to a new office…directly across the street. Still settling into the new workstation, but by and large I like the new digs. Hooray for sideways mobility?
WRITING A NOVEL. Other than that, just writing writing writing away at the new novel; just about to hit 80,000 words and closing in on the big finale. On track to finish by my Christmas deadline!
I must be getting close, because recently I procrastinated by finishing off a couple of GarageBand tunes that had been languishing on my computer for months. Have a listen, if you like; first new songs in a while!
