The comic book Chew continues to impress in its third and fourth trade paperback collections, “Just Desserts” and “Flambe’.” If you’re unfamiliar with this series, you can check out my previous posts about it here and here. In these latest volumes, cibopathic detective Tony Chu’s career as a special agent of the Food and Drug Administration takes several dangerous new turns, and introduces several new characters with food-related superpowers. His path intersects with nemeses old and new, an apolyptic cult, mutated superfoods, strange alien languages, a killer chicken, and copious gore — meanwhile going into more depth about Chu’s extended family and personal life. Not for the squeamish, this is a sickly imaginative, dark, funny, one of a kind comic series. Looking forward to more, once my stomach settles!
