Busy Weekends

I often hole up at home on weekends. After a busy week commuting back and forth to the day job, it’s tempting to stay home, kick your feet up, and avoid the traffic. But every now and then it’s nice to get out and about this crazy, vibrant place, and the last couple of weekends of March were particularly eventful.

Two weekends ago, we drove up to beautiful Montrose for Jenn’s book launch at Once Upon a Time, a great little children’s bookstore. The event was a big success: Jenn packed the house, the crowd was entertained, books were sold, and we got to hang out with a good number of our awesomely supportive local friends.

This past weekend was even busier. My brother Alex flew out to visit friends and escape the Midwestern winter. On Friday, we had lunch with him in Venice Beach and then checked out the beautiful Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. Here we are on the Venice Boardwalk:

Then on Saturday, we hit Wondercon in Anaheim for the day. It was an exhausting but wonderful (heh) time, and also the first time Jenn and I have gone back to the Anaheim Convention Center where we met back in 2006! I attended some engaging panels: a talk from comic book creator John Layman (whose series Chew is among my favorites), a panel on writing for animation, and a terrific panel by some LA-based literary agents. But maybe my favorite part of the day was people-watching the cosplayers, who were everywhere, and bursting with passion for their comics, movies, and shows. (Also: add Nichelle Nichols to my celebrity sighting list!)

Overall, it’s been a great couple of weeks. Now, time to get back to work!
