Independent comic The Massive is a unique postapocalyptic series about a high-seas environmental group called the Ninth Wave. In the wake of a global cataclysm, the Ninth Wave — aboard the conservationist ship Kapital — sails the oceans in search of its missing sister ship, the Massive. Along the way, its crew, led by former private sector mercenaries Callum and Mag and a mysterious woman named Mary, negotiate the post-collapse world, struggling to maintain their nonviolent agenda in the face of an ever more violent world.
The Massive is an unusual book, and a nice change of pace from the usual superhero fare. Its near-future environmental focus is timely and unique, and its cast of characters well defined. I found Brian Wood’s writing evocative and compelling, if occasionally on the infodump-y side. The artwork from Garry Brown and Kristian Donaldson is solid and effective. I wouldn’t call it a must-read, but I enjoyed it and expect to continue with the series.
