When I get stressed or depressed, my favorite coping mechanism is to launch a new project that requires extremely little thought. Usually it’s some kind of tedious, repetitive, mildly creative busywork: drawing a world map for a fictional work-in-progress, burning old CDs into the cloud, tagging digital photos.
I’ve been doing this for years, but at no time was it more rewarding than when I produced Every Episode of Mission: Impossible, Ranked, which quite accidentally went on to become this site’s most popular post. In many ways, 2019 has been a year of epic stress and periodic depression, what with the daily dogpile of work, health, financial, political, and climate-related concerns accumulating. So for my latest therapy project, I went back to the world of the original Mission: Impossible to beef up the rankings post and embrace my nostalgic TV roots. Over the past several weeks, I’ve added hundreds of captioned screenshots, and also assembled season-based image galleries. I also proofed the post to correct typos and make a few minor adjustments. (You know, it just didn’t feel right that “The Mind of Stefan Miklos” wasn’t in my top five.)
Anyway, I’ve concluded this latest therapy binge, and not only am I pleased with the result, but I’m happy to report the distraction got me through some tough stretches this year. I greatly enjoyed putting it together, and hope you Mission fans out there in the audience get a kick out of it too.
